Product features

Quick answer: When a ute tub, toolbox or trailer needs a texture coat that stands up to sun, fuel and salt water, TXT 2K Black is the tougher option. TXT Coating 2K Black is a two part, high solids polyurethane texture coating made in Australia by Car Builders. Each 1L kit is an 800ml bottle of black coating plus a 200ml hardener, mixed in the bottle. Cured, it holds up to UV, rust and corrosion and resists fuel, hydraulic oil, salt water and animal urine. Expect about 3.5 square metres per litre for one coat.

Why go 2K?

  • Ute tubs and trailers that cop sun, fuel and salt. The cured polyurethane film has strong UV holdout and shrugs off fuels, hydraulic oils, salt water and urine.
  • A texture that is too rough for the job. Add TXT 2K Reducer and the finish goes from coarse to fine, right down to near smooth.
  • No spray gear. It can be rolled or brushed on as well.

How the two parts work together

Part B hardener reacts with Part A once mixed, and the film cures hard. The mix is thick, which keeps the texture forgiving on uneven surfaces. A Schutz gun gives the classic grain. Thinned with reducer, it sprays through a conventional gun for a finer look.

What is in the kit

  • 1 x TXT 2K Black Part A, 800ml
  • 1 x TXT Hardener Part B, 200ml

Working out how many kits

One kit gives about 3.5 square metres at one coat, or 1.75 square metres at two, through a Schutz gun at 70psi. The four bottle option is a true 4L. On bigger jobs buy extra bottles and only activate one at a time.

Jobs TXT 2K Black suits

Ute tubs, toolboxes, fender flares, wheel houses, under carriages, chassis, caravans and trailers, up to a full exterior. It suits metal, aluminium, galvanised steel, rigid plastic, fibreglass and wood. Flexible plastic needs an adhesion promoter under it.

Mixing and spraying

Difficulty: Moderate. Schutz or HVLP gun with a compressor, or a roller or brush.

  1. Sand back to 80 to 180 grit on steel, aluminium, galvanised steel, rigid plastic and fibreglass. Flexible plastic: 180 to 240 grit plus adhesion promoter.
  2. Wipe down with solvent based wax and grease remover or isopropanol until no oil or dust is left. Timber just needs to be clean and dry.
  3. Over bare metal, an etch or epoxy primer first gives the best rust protection. Scuff it if fully cured.
  4. Pour the 200ml hardener into the bottle and mix it right through. Activate one bottle at a time.
  5. Run the gun and air on their own before you connect the bottle.
  6. With a Schutz gun, screw it onto the bottle, fit a 4mm tip or bigger and set 50 to 100psi. Raise the pressure for a finer grain.
  7. Spray from 20 to 25cm, overlapping each pass, and put on two coats or more.
  8. Leave 25 min between coats at 25°C, longer if it is cool.
  9. Uneven pattern after the last coat? Stand back 45 to 60cm and mist over at 45 degrees.
  10. Wash the gun out the moment you finish, using solvent gun wash, acetone or thinners.

2K mistakes to avoid

  • Activating every bottle at once. Mixed 2K gels in the bottle.
  • Mixing in water based, polyester or enamel paint.
  • Going past 20% reducer.
  • Spraying under 5°C, or curing outside below the dew point.

FAQ

What does the hardener change compared with TXT 1K?

2K is catalysed with a hardener, so it is tougher, more chemical resistant and made for UV exposed areas. Once mixed it has to be used. 1K needs no hardener and keeps in the tin.

Can I get a smoother finish?

Yes. Thin with TXT 2K Reducer, 10% for fine or 20% for smooth, and spray through a conventional gun with about a 2.5mm tip.

How long is the pot life?

3 hours at 10°C, 2 hours at 20°C and 1 hour at 30°C.

Will it go over existing paint?

Scuff and degrease cured paint first. Never mix it with water based, polyester or enamel paint, and test a small patch over anything unknown.

Can I brush it on?

Yes, a roller or brush both work.
