Product features

Quick answer: If black texture does not suit the build, or coloured coatings fade and wear through, this kit lets you tint a tough 2K texture coating yourself. TXT Coating 2K Tintable is the colour version of the Car Builders 2K polyurethane texture coating. Each 1L kit has a 720ml bottle of tintable base and a 200ml hardener, with room in the bottle for 80ml of your own solvent based tint. You get 2K toughness and UV holdout in the colour you choose, at about 3.5 square metres per litre per coat.

Why choose the tintable kit?

  • Black texture that does not suit the build. Tint the base with a 2K colour or basecoat tinter to get close to your paint scheme.
  • Coloured coatings that fade or wear through. Activated, it cures to a high solids polyurethane with UV holdout and resistance to fuel, oil and salt water.
  • Colour matching at home. Take your colour code to a paint shop with a No Mix system, such as Autobarn or Supercheap, and have them fill the 80ml.

How tinting and activating works

Add the tint to Part A first and mix it through, then add Part B. Tint can be up to 20% by volume, using urethane or acrylic solid colours or mixed acrylic base coats. Because the base is opaque and the surface is textured, an exact factory colour match is not realistic. Expect a close shade.

Kit contents

  • 1 x TXT 2K Tintable base, 720ml
  • 1 x TXT Hardener, 200ml
  • Tint not supplied, you add 80ml

How far does a kit go?

Around 3.5 square metres per litre for a single coat or 1.75 for a double coat, based on a Schutz gun at 70psi. Tint each bottle the same way so they all match, and only activate the bottle you are about to spray.

Where can coloured TXT go?

The same places as TXT 2K Black: ute tubs, toolboxes, flares, wheel houses, caravans, trailers, chassis and whole exteriors. Use it on metal, aluminium, galvanised steel, rigid plastic, fibreglass or wood, with adhesion promoter on flexible plastics.

Tinting and spraying, start to finish

Difficulty: Moderate. You need your tint, a compressor and a Schutz or HVLP gun, or a roller or brush.

  1. Prep: 80 to 180 grit on hard surfaces, 180 to 240 grit plus adhesion promoter on flexible plastic.
  2. Clean off every trace of grease and dust with wax and grease remover or isopropanol. Keep liquid solvent off timber.
  3. Prime bare steel with etch or epoxy for maximum rust protection.
  4. Pour 80ml of solvent based tint into the base and stir it in fully.
  5. Now add the 200ml Part B and mix again.
  6. Test the air supply alone, then screw the Schutz gun on with a 4mm or larger tip at 50 to 100psi.
  7. Lay at least two coats from 20 to 25cm. Give each one 25 min at 25°C to flash.
  8. Even out blotchy areas with a light dusting from 45 to 60cm at a 45 degree angle.
  9. Clean up immediately in gun wash, acetone or thinners.

Tinting mistakes to avoid

  • Adding hardener before the tint. Tint goes in first.
  • More than 20% tint by volume.
  • Expecting a factory exact match on a textured, opaque base.
  • Water based tint. Solvent based only.

FAQ

Where do I get the tint?

Any paint supplier with a No Mix system, such as Autobarn or Supercheap. Ask for 80ml of solvent based tint in your colour code.

Will it match my factory paint exactly?

No. The opaque base and the texture rule out an exact factory match. It will be close.

Can I tint it with water based paint?

No. Use solvent based tint only. TXT 2K can not be mixed with water based, polyester or enamel paints.

How long can I work with it once mixed?

Roughly an hour at 30°C, up to three hours at 10°C.

Is the tint supplied?

No, you add your own 80ml.
