Quick answer: Car Builders Mass Noise Liner is a 12mm heavyweight acoustic barrier: a 2mm mass loaded vinyl layer bonded to 10mm closed cell foam. It goes over Stage 1 deadener to block airborne noise from the engine, road and exhaust. It is water resistant and removable, which is why it suits 4x4s that see river crossings.

What problems does the Car Builders Mass Noise Liner fix?

  • Exhaust drone. Laid in the boot as a liner, it reduces drone that Car Builders say is common in 6 cylinders, V8s and flat fours.
  • Engine noise through the firewall. Used as a firewall barrier in 4WDs and muscle cars.
  • Flooded 4x4 cabins. The closed cell foam does not absorb water. Lift it out, clean the floor and refit it.
  • Road noise in vans and trucks. It works on rigid ribbed floors even without Stage 1 underneath.

How it works

Stage 1 deadener stops vibration. Mass Noise Liner is Stage 2: the dense vinyl layer blocks airborne noise, and the foam decouples it from the floor and insulates against heat.

How much do I need?

This listing is 1 sheet, 1600 x 950mm, about 1.5 square metres. Measure the floor or firewall you want to cover and order one sheet for every 1.5 square metres, plus a little extra for trimming.

Will it fit my vehicle?

It is sold by the sheet, not cut for a model. Car Builders list firewalls, cargo areas, van floors and boot floors in 4WDs, muscle cars, trucks and vans.

How to install

Difficulty: Moderate. It is heavy, so it lays on floors and firewalls rather than sticking to ceilings.

  1. Apply Stage 1 Sound Deadener to the floor or firewall. On ribbed van or cargo floors this is optional.
  2. Cut the Mass Noise Liner to shape with scissors or a knife.
  3. Lay it in place of the factory carpet underlay and refit the carpet.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Fitting it to the underside of horizontal surfaces. It is too heavy. Use Acoustic Liner, Waterproof Carpet Underlay or Insul-Layer there instead.

FAQ

Does Mass Noise Liner do the same job as deadener?

Sound deadener goes on the metal to stop vibration. Mass Noise Liner sits over it and blocks airborne noise.

Do I need deadener underneath?

It maximises the result, but on rigid ribbed van or cargo floors Mass Noise Liner works well on its own.

Can I remove it if the cabin floods?

Yes. Lift it out, clean the floor and put it back.

Can I stick it under the roof?

Car Builders do not recommend it on the underside of horizontal surfaces because of its weight. Use a light foam such as Insul-Layer there.
