Quick answer: Acoustic Liner is the Car Builders 12mm Stage 2 carpet underlay, made from 6mm of open cell foam and 6mm of closed cell foam with a peel and stick back. It goes under your carpet to cut road noise and floor heat, and it will not rot or break down. Each box holds one 1800 x 950mm sheet, 1.7 square metres.

Why fit Acoustic Liner?

  • Road noise coming up through the floor. Car Builders designed this twin layer foam to deal with both noise and heat under the carpet.
  • A hot floor and firewall. It doubles as thermal insulation, with a heat conductivity factor of 0.034 W/(m.K) or less at 0°C.
  • Old underlay that smells. Acoustic Liner will not rot, mould or break down over time.
  • Messy glue jobs. The peel and stick back means no adhesive on a normal floor.

How it works

The sheet pairs a 6mm open cell foam with a darker 6mm closed cell foam on top. Together they give acoustic and thermal insulation in a light sheet that sits under the carpet, over Stage 1 Sound Deadener.

How many boxes do I need?

Each box covers 1.7 square metres. Measure the floor, firewall and any door skins you plan to do, divide the total by 1.7 and round up.

Will it fit my vehicle?

Acoustic Liner comes as flat sheet you cut to shape, not a part for one model. Use it under carpet, inside door skins, on quarter panels and firewalls, and in interior cavities.

How to install Acoustic Liner

Difficulty: Easy. Most of the work is getting the seats and carpet out.

  1. With the cabin stripped, fit Stage 1 Sound Deadener to the floor pan first.
  2. Degrease the surface using isopropyl alcohol wax and grease remover. Methylated spirits and turps both leave a film behind.
  3. Use the old carpet as a pattern, mark around it and cut the underlay slightly oversize.
  4. Peel the liner and set the foam down from the middle of the floor outwards, without stretching it.
  5. Roll the whole sheet firmly with an Application Roller, paying extra attention to the tunnel and edges.
  6. Prick any air bubble and roll it flat.
  7. Any piece fitted upside down needs Spray Adhesive behind it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Laying underlay before the Stage 1 deadener.
  • Fitting it inverted with no adhesive.
  • Leaving edges unrolled where the carpet will drag on them.

FAQ

Is 12mm too thick for my transmission tunnel?

Car Builders put carpet underlay at 4 to 12mm, so this sits at the thick end. Check clearance in tight spots before you commit.

Does Acoustic Liner stick on by itself?

Only where it is fitted upside down.

How does it compare with Waterproof Carpet Underlay?

Acoustic Liner is twin layer and 12mm. Waterproof Carpet Underlay is a single 10mm closed cell layer for vehicles that get wet.

What is the fire rating?

Grade B2 flame retardant.
