What problems does the Car Builders Stage 1 Sound Deadener Mat fix?

• Drumming panels and that tinny sound. The butyl layer absorbs vibration and adds mass to the panel, which cuts the resonance that makes thin metal ring.
• Road noise and echo in the cabin. With the panels no longer ringing, echo drops and you hear passengers and your stereo better.
• Heat coming through the floor and roof. Car Builders lists reduced heat transfer as a feature of this mat.
• Old tar deadener that smells and cracks. This is butyl, not bitumen. It needs no heating, has no odour and will not go brittle over time.

How it works

Stage 1 treats vibration. You stick it straight onto bare sheet metal and roll it down. Car Builders point out that butyl sheets alone will not stop droning or outside noise. For that you add a Stage 2 barrier such as Mass Noise Liner or Acoustic Liner over the top.

What is in the box

• 12 sheets, each 300 x 500mm
• 2 to 2.2mm thick
• 1.8 square metres coverage per box

How much do I need?

One box covers 1.8 square metres. Car Builders sell 1 to 6 boxes (up to 10.8 square metres) and single sheets of 0.15 square metres if you finish a box a few sheets short. Measure the panels you plan to cover and divide by 1.8 to get your box count.

Will it fit my vehicle?

Car Builders do not tie Stage 1 to a model. They list it for under carpets, roof skins, inside cavities, quarter panels, doors, boots and firewalls, in cars, utes, 4x4s and vans.

How to install

Difficulty: Easy. Peel off the release liner, press it on and roll it. It cuts with scissors or a knife and conforms to all types of sheet metal.

1. Wipe each panel with wax and grease remover (isopropyl alcohol). Turps and metho leave an oily layer behind and the butyl will not hold well on it.
2. Pull the backing paper and lay the sheet down relaxed. If you stretch it on, it tries to shrink back later.
3. Go over every part of the sheet with an Application Roller, pressing hard.
4. Prick any trapped air with a knife tip and roll that spot flat.

Mistakes to avoid

• Prepping with metho or turps.
• Pulling sheets tight to make them reach.
• Pressing by hand only. Without a roller, air stays trapped and the sheet lets go sooner.
• Expecting Stage 1 alone to fix droning. Add a Stage 2 barrier for that.

Does it need heating to install?
