Product features

Quick answer: Engine noise through a firewall and exhaust drone in the boot get past foam alone. Mass Loaded Vinyl is a heavy, limp barrier sheet that blocks that sound like a blanket. It weighs 4kg per square metre, is 2mm thick and comes in a 1.35m x 1.95m sheet. The woven textile back lets you glue it with contact adhesive, and it works best over a decoupling layer such as Insul-Layer foam.

What problems does the Mass Loaded Vinyl fix?

  • Motor noise coming through a 4WD or truck firewall. Car Builders list it as a firewall barrier for 4WDs and trucks.
  • Boot drone from the exhaust on sixes, V8s and flat fours. Laid in the boot as a liner, it cuts that drone.
  • MLV that will not glue. The woven textile back takes contact adhesive, so no toxic vinyl cement.
  • Needing to get back to the panel later. Use it as a removable sound blanket where peel and stick is not wanted.

How it works

Sound needs to move mass to get through a barrier. MLV is heavy and limp, so it soaks up airborne noise instead of passing it on. Separate it from the vibrating panel with a decoupling foam so the panel does not drive the vinyl.

What is in the box

  • 1 x Mass Loaded Vinyl sheet, 1.35m x 1.95m, 2mm

How much do I need?

One sheet is 1.35m x 1.95m. Measure the floor, firewall or boot area and template your pieces before cutting.

Will it fit my vehicle?

No vehicle list is given; Car Builders sell it by the sheet for floor pans, wheel arches, under back seats, firewalls, engine rooms and compressors.

How to install

Difficulty: Moderate. Heavy to handle, and every join needs sealing.

  1. Fit Stage 1 Sound Deadener to the panel first if needed.
  2. Lay a decoupling layer such as Insul-Layer foam.
  3. Template the area and cut the MLV to shape.
  4. Glue it down with contact adhesive on the textile back, or leave it loose as a removable blanket.
  5. Seal every join and relief cut with the Mass Noise Liner Joining Kit.
  6. Refit carpet or trim over the top.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Gluing MLV straight to a bare vibrating panel with no decoupling layer.
  • Leaving gaps at joins.
  • Using it as a finished surface. It will mark and discolour.
