Product features

Quick answer: This is a muffler shield that clamps straight onto the hot can. A woven ceramic core sits inside a dimpled aluminium skin, it is flameproof, rated to 1000°C continuous and 1350°C peak, and one 480 x 600mm sheet wraps a typical muffler with clamps supplied.

Muffler heat problems it sorts out

  • A muffler cooking the floor pan and cabin above it. The ceramic core sits right on the can and holds the heat in before it reaches the floor.
  • Nearby parts sitting beside a bare, hot can. The shield mounts directly on the muffler, so the metal around it is no longer exposed to the raw surface.
  • Bulky wraps that will not fit between the can and the chassis. The sheet is 9mm thick, compact, light and bends to the shape of the muffler body.
  • A heat wrap that shifts on the muffler. Each piece is held down with the radiator hose clamps that come with it.

Why the aluminium and ceramic combination works

The woven ceramic layer does the insulating and the dimpled aluminium outer protects it and holds its shape. You fold the aluminium over the trimmed ceramic so the edges are sealed in, then clamp the whole parcel to the muffler with the ceramic touching the can.

What is in the box

  • 480 x 600mm embossed aluminium sheet with a woven ceramic core
  • 800mm radiator hose clamps

How much of the muffler should I cover?

Car Builders recommend covering about 270° of the muffler and leaving the rest open so it can vent. One 480 x 600mm sheet is supplied, so lay it over your muffler first to see how far it reaches.

Which mufflers and exhaust parts does it suit?

It is a flat sheet sized for a typical muffler rather than one exhaust. Car Builders also say it bends to suit other hot parts of the exhaust system, so offcuts are not wasted.

Fitting the shield to a muffler

Difficulty: Moderate. Scissors for the ceramic and a tool to tighten the hose clamps. Work on a cold exhaust.

  1. Drape the ceramic blanket over the muffler to mark out the area you want covered.
  2. Cut the ceramic down to that size with scissors.
  3. Lay the trimmed ceramic on the embossed aluminium sheet.
  4. Fold the aluminium back over the ceramic with a full 180 degree fold so it is enclosed.
  5. Offer the parcel up to the muffler with the ceramic side down against the can.
  6. Do up the supplied radiator hose clamps around the muffler to hold it.

Muffler shield mistakes to avoid

  • Trimming the aluminium to the same size as the ceramic. Leave extra aluminium so the fold can close over the edge.
  • Clamping it on with the aluminium face against the muffler. Ceramic goes on the hot side.
  • Closing the shield right round the can. About 270° with a vent gap is what Car Builders advise.
  • Leaving the clamps slack so the shield can shift and wear.

FAQ

What is the muffler shield made from?

A high temperature dimpled aluminium outer that encloses woven ceramic insulation. Car Builders rate it to 1000°C continuous.

Are the clamps included?

Yes. Car Builders supply 800mm radiator hose clamps with the shield. Car Builders do not list how many clamps come with it.

Can I wrap it all the way around the muffler?

Car Builders say to cover about 270° and leave space for venting, so the can still has some airflow.

Will it go on anything other than a muffler?

Yes. It is flexible enough to shape around other hot exhaust parts, according to Car Builders.

What sheet thickness do Car Builders list for the muffler shield?

9mm, in the Car Builders specifications. Check that you have that much room between the muffler and the chassis before you fit it.
