Product features

Quick answer: Car Builders Ceramic Insulation is a needle punched ceramic fibre blanket rated up to 1150°C. Each sheet is 300 x 1000mm and 9mm thick. You wrap it around headers, downpipes and turbo housings, then cover it with an outer skin such as Car Builders Inconel 625 sheet to build a lightweight custom heat shield.

Why fit a ceramic blanket under an outer skin?

  • Heat soak in the engine bay. The blanket has low thermal conductivity, so it keeps exhaust heat inside the pipe instead of cooking the parts around it.
  • Odd shapes that a flat shield will not follow. It is soft and pliable, and cuts with scissors or a knife to fit around bends, flanges and turbo housings.
  • Insulation that breaks down when it gets hot. Car Builders rate it to withstand thermal shock and keep its strength, with no binders or fillers in the blanket.
  • Itchy fibreglass. Car Builders state it contains no fibreglass or silica.

How it works

The blanket is the insulating layer of a heat wrap system. It slows heat moving out of the exhaust or turbo. On its own it is soft, so Car Builders match it with their Inconel 625 sheet as a hard outer skin that holds the blanket in place and protects it.

What is in the box

  • 1 ceramic fibre insulation sheet, 300 x 1000mm, 9mm thick

How much do I need?

Measure the length of pipe you want to cover and its distance around. One sheet is 300mm wide and 1000mm long.

Will it fit my vehicle?

The blanket is sold flat, for you to shape. It suits exhausts, headers, downpipes, turbo housings, custom firewalls and under bonnet barriers on whatever you are building, as long as you have room for the blanket plus an outer skin.

How to install

Difficulty: Moderate. Easy to cut, but a neat finish needs an outer skin formed around it.

  1. Make a paper template of the pipe or housing you want to cover.
  2. Cut the blanket to the template with sharp scissors or a knife.
  3. Wrap the blanket around the part.
  4. Form an outer skin over it, such as Car Builders Inconel 625 sheet, and spot weld or tie it closed so the blanket cannot move.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the blanket bare on a part that sees road spray or rubbing. Cover it with an outer skin.
  • Wrapping it loosely. Gaps let heat escape and let the blanket move.
  • Guessing the size. Template first, then cut.
