Product features

Quick answer: A hot downpipe or cat sitting close to the floor, a brake line or a wiring loom cooks what is next to it. This 1000 x 300mm shield wraps straight onto the pipe to keep that heat in. The 1000 x 300mm sheet has a woven ceramic core inside dimpled aluminium, is flameproof and rated to 1000°C continuous, and comes with eight stainless Click Ties to strap it on.

Pipe heat problems this shield deals with

  • Headers and downpipes radiating heat through a crowded engine bay. The shield goes straight onto the pipe so the heat is held at the source.
  • A DPF or catalytic converter radiating into the floor. It is made to sit directly on those parts, which adhesive heat shields cannot do.
  • Pipe wraps that come undone or need special tools. The supplied stainless Click Ties adjust, come off again and need no special tools.
  • Not knowing how wide to cut for the pipe. Car Builders give the circumference for common pipe sizes, listed below.

How it works and why it holds heat

Inside is woven ceramic insulation, outside is a dimpled aluminium face that protects it and can be folded over to seal the edges. Because it is built for direct contact, it is the one to use on the pipe itself. Peel and Stick Heat Shield, rated to 500°C, is for deflecting heat on nearby panels.

What is in the box

  • Embossed aluminium sheet with woven ceramic insulation, 1000 x 300mm
  • 8 stainless Click Ties, 7mm x 400mm

Working out how much pipe you can cover

Measure around the pipe and use that as your cut width. Car Builders list 2 inch pipe at 159.5mm, 2.5 inch at 199.5mm, 3 inch at 239mm and 3.5 inch at 279mm around. Cover the full 360° in tight spots like the engine bay, and about 270° on road facing sections so some air can get through.

Which exhaust parts does it suit?

No vehicle list is given; you size it by pipe. Car Builders list headers, manifolds, downpipes, catalytic converters, exhaust systems, DPFs and turbo housings.

Wrapping a pipe step by step

Difficulty: Moderate. Scissors and a cold exhaust. The Click Ties need no tools.

  1. Measure around the pipe, or read the circumference from the table in the sizing section.
  2. Cut the ceramic insulation to that width and the length of pipe you are covering.
  3. Set the ceramic on the aluminium sheet.
  4. Turn the aluminium edge back over the ceramic to seal it in.
  5. Wrap it onto the pipe with the ceramic against the metal.
  6. Lock it down with the Click Ties, or with radiator hose clamps if you prefer.

Mistakes that make pipe fits go wrong

  • Cutting the ceramic to the full sheet width on a small pipe. Size it from the circumference first.
  • Fitting the aluminium face to the pipe instead of the ceramic.
  • Wrapping a road facing pipe the full way round. Car Builders suggest about 270° there.
  • Running the Click Ties loose, which lets the shield slide along the pipe.

FAQ

When should I pick this over Peel and Stick Heat Shield?

Pick this one for anything you are wrapping directly, like exhaust tube, headers or a cat. Peel and Stick is adhesive, rated to 500°C, and is for reflecting heat off surrounding areas such as the underbody or firewall.

What is inside the aluminium?

Woven ceramic insulation. The dimpled aluminium face encloses it, and the shield is flameproof to 1000°C continuous.

What ties come with it?

Eight stainless Click Ties, 7mm x 400mm. They adjust, can be removed and need no special tools.

What width do I cut for my pipe?

Car Builders list 159.5mm for 2 inch, 199.5mm for 2.5 inch, 239mm for 3 inch and 279mm for 3.5 inch.

Can it go on a turbo housing?

Yes. Car Builders list turbo housings along with headers, manifolds, downpipes, cats and DPFs.
