Quick answer: Standard carpet pleats and lifts when you try to pull it around a wheel arch or a speaker box. 4 Way Stretch Carpet stretches both ways, so it follows those curves under contact adhesive. It is UV stable, 2m wide, sold in 1m, 3m and 12m lengths, and glues down with contact adhesive. It is not made for underfoot areas.

What problems does the 4 Way Stretch Carpet fix?

  • Carpet that creases and bunches over curves. The 4 way stretch lets it pull around wheel arches and compound curves without pleats.
  • Faded trim in a sunny van or ute. It is UV stable, so it holds its colour better in the sun.

How it works

This is a cut pile carpet with a stretch in both directions. Spray or brush contact adhesive on the panel and the carpet back, let it tack off, then lay the carpet and work it around the shape. Because the pile stretches in both directions, a speaker box corner or arch takes it without relief cuts.

How much do I need?

Every metre of length is 2 square metres of carpet. Measure the panels you want to cover, add some for wrapping edges, and pick the 1m, 3m or 12m length to suit. Car Builders state the carpet is available up to 3m long in one piece.

Will it fit my vehicle?

Car Builders call this a universal carpet and do not tie it to a vehicle. It is meant for walls, wheel arches, quarter panels, rear firewalls, roofs, boot lids and speaker boxes. Keep it off floors.

How to install

Difficulty: Moderate. Once 4 Way Stretch touches tacky contact glue it grabs hard, so dry fit and mark each piece first.

  1. Clean the panel and remove any old carpet, glue and dust.
  2. Leave a generous border when you cut the 4 Way Stretch so there is enough to fold behind the panel.
  3. Coat both surfaces, panel and carpet backing, with contact glue and wait until it is tacky.
  4. Start in the middle of the panel and pull the stretch carpet outward, easing it over each curve.
  5. Fold the border behind the panel and cut off what is left with a fresh blade.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Laying 4 Way Stretch in a footwell, where shoes wear it out.
  • Mixing batches on one job without checking the colour match first.
  • Laying the carpet before the contact adhesive has tacked off.

Can 4 Way Stretch go on a floor or footwell?

No. Car Builders say it is not suitable underfoot, so pick a floor grade carpet or vinyl for that.

Which adhesive holds 4 Way Stretch on a curved panel?

Contact adhesive. Car Builders Premium Spray Adhesive is made for the job.

Will a new 4 Way Stretch roll match my last batch?

Batches can differ a little in colour. Contact our team before you order and we will check the batch number with Car Builders.

How much area does each metre of 4 Way Stretch give me?

2m wide. A 3m length gives you 6 square metres.

Is Light Brown available in 12m?

Not at the moment. Light Brown is offered in 1m and 3m lengths.
