Why replace the firewall pad on a VB to VK?

• The factory pad has crumbled away. With age the original insulation deteriorates and breaks down. This pad replaces it whether yours is damaged, missing or simply worn out.
• Engine heat in the cabin. Once the factory pad goes, heat transfer through the firewall rises. The PUBIN material is heat resistant and non ignitable.
• More engine noise in the cabin. The pad restores the acoustic layer, and the optional deadener sheets damp vibration in the firewall itself.
• A restoration that has to look right. It is finished in black for a factory style look under the bonnet, and precisely cut to the firewall contours.

How it works

The pad is Premium Underbonnet Insulation, or PUBIN, a needle punched polyester with a peel and stick backing. It blocks heat and noise coming through the firewall and tolerates moisture, wear and high pressure washing. If you add the deadener sheets, they go on the bare firewall first to damp vibration, and the pad goes over them as a second layer.

Choosing your options

• Add On: None for the pad alone, or add the 6 deadener sheets, the application roller, or both.

How much do I need?

One pad does the firewall. The deadener add on is 6 sheets of 300mm x 500mm, which Car Builders suggest mapping out on the firewall before you stick anything down.

Which Commodores does it fit?

Car Builders cut it for the VB, VC, VH and VK Holden Commodore firewall. It is not listed for VL or later models.

How to install

Difficulty: Moderate. Access to the firewall is the hard part, the pad itself is peel and stick.

1. Strip off what is left of the old pad and clean the firewall with a wax and grease remover.
2. Offer the new pad up before removing the backing and check every hole and contour lines up.
3. If you bought the deadener, map out the sheets, stick them to the bare firewall and roll them firmly.
4. Peel a small section of the pad backing and anchor it in the centre of the firewall.
5. Work outwards a section at a time, peeling as you go, without stretching the material.
6. Roll the whole pad down firmly so it bonds evenly. The Car Builders roller has a radiused wheel that will not mark or tear the material, and its handle doubles as a shaping tool for contours.

Mistakes to avoid

• Peeling the backing before you have lined the pad up on the Commodore firewall holes.
• Pulling the pad tight to reach an edge, which distorts the cut.
• Leaving old adhesive and grime on the firewall.

Will it fit a VL Commodore?

No. Car Builders list it for VB, VC, VH and VK only.

Does the Commodore firewall pad need adhesive?

No. It has its own self adhesive backing.

Is it enough for a turbo build?

For high heat areas near the firewall, Car Builders suggest fitting the pad normally and then adding their Peel and Stick Heat Shield only in the hot spots.

Will a high pressure wash lift the Commodore firewall pad?

No. Car Builders say the pad withstands high pressure washing.
