Product features

Quick answer: Engine heat bakes bonnet paint from underneath and engine noise comes straight through the bonnet skin. This self adhesive black polyester sheet stops both, and you cut it to your own bonnet. It is rated to 207°C, meets MVSS 302 for flame retardance and stands up to pressure washing. It protects bonnet paint from engine heat and cuts engine noise, and you cut it to suit any bonnet.

What problems does the Car Builders Premium Under Bonnet Insulation fix?

  • Bonnet paint cooking from engine heat. The pad shields the underside of the bonnet from engine heat to protect the paint and panel.
  • Old pad falling apart or hanging down. It replaces worn factory pads, or adds insulation to older vehicles that never had any.
  • Engine noise. Car Builders state it dampens engine noise for a quieter drive.
  • Insulation that will not survive a wash. Car Builders state it withstands high pressure washing and keeps its look.

How it works

The polyester fibre layer sits between the engine and the bonnet skin. It slows heat getting to the paint and soaks up engine noise. The self adhesive backing holds it to the bonnet, and it is flexible enough to follow the bonnet shape.

How much do I need?

Measure the area of the bonnet you want to cover and add 5 to 10cm all round for the contours. Car Builders make a Standard and an Extra Large sheet. Ask us which one suits your bonnet before ordering.

Will it fit my vehicle?

Car Builders say it suits any vehicle, because you make a template and cut it to your bonnet. Cover the whole underside or fill in sections.

How to install

Difficulty: easy to moderate, and the slow part is feeding it into the bonnet ribs.

  1. Clean the bonnet underside with wax and grease remover so it is free of residue.
  2. Measure the area and cut the sheet 5 to 10cm larger all round.
  3. Find the centre of the bonnet. Peel back the backing in the middle section only.
  4. Stick the centre down first, then work outwards, peeling the backing and rolling it down with an application roller.
  5. Feed the material into concave areas rather than stretching it.
  6. Trim the edges with a sharp blade, taking care not to cut the paint. Pierce any trapped air bubbles and roll them flat.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the wax and grease remover. Residue stops the adhesive holding.
  • Peeling the whole backing off at once. It is much harder to position.
  • Stretching the sheet into the ribs instead of feeding it in.
  • Cutting it to exact size before fitting. Leave the margin and trim last.
