Car Builders Inconel heat shield formed over exhaust headers and turbo pipework

Product features

Quick answer: Radiant heat off headers, turbos and downpipes cooks the parts around them, and ordinary shields crack or melt. IncShield is a 0.13mm sheet of Inconel 625 that forms a hard skin over ceramic insulation. It forms the hard outer skin over ceramic insulation on headers, exhausts, downpipes and turbo manifolds. It cuts and bends by hand or with basic tools, and spot welds into a rigid shell.

What problems does the Car Builders Inconel 625 Weldable Heat Shield Sheet fix?

  • Radiant heat cooking the engine bay. Teamed with ceramic insulation, the Inconel skin cuts radiant heat from headers, turbos and downpipes and protects the parts around them.
  • Shields that crack or melt. Inconel 625 is a superalloy built for extreme heat and harsh environments.
  • Shapes too complex for an off the shelf shield. At 0.13mm it is thin enough to form around curves and corners with tin snips, a hammer and shrinking pliers.
  • Rust and road grime. Car Builders state it resists corrosion, rust and road grime.

How it works

Inconel is the outer skin of a custom heat wrap. Ceramic insulation goes on the pipe first, then the Inconel is formed over it and spot welded into a hard shell. The skin holds and protects the insulation and gives a clean finished look.

What is in the box

  • 1 Inconel 625 sheet, 1000 x 300mm, 0.13mm thick

How much do I need?

Measure the length and distance around each part, including the insulation underneath. One sheet is 1000 x 300mm. Make paper templates first so you can lay the pieces out on the sheet with little waste.

Will it fit my vehicle?

It is a flat 1000 x 300mm sheet you form yourself. Car Builders list headers, exhausts, turbo manifolds and downpipes. It is made to go over insulation such as Car Builders Ceramic Insulation.

How to install

Difficulty: Advanced. You need to form thin metal and spot weld it.

  1. Make paper templates of the part. Break complex shapes into smaller pieces.
  2. Cut the Inconel to the templates with tin snips.
  3. Shape it with a hammer and shrinking pliers, gathering, stretching and shifting the metal around curves.
  4. Fit ceramic insulation to the part first, then place the Inconel pieces over it.
  5. Spot weld the pieces together into a rigid shell. Car Builders use a dent puller style spot welder, or a MIG welder with the wire feed removed and the tip shaped to a point or chisel, on low amps.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Welding with too much heat. At 0.13mm it needs very little.
  • Cutting without a template, which wastes sheet on complex shapes.
  • Fitting the skin without insulation underneath. It is designed as the outer layer.

FAQ

How do I shape Inconel heat shield?

Start with paper templates, then use tin snips, hammers and shrinking pliers to gather, stretch and shift the metal around curves and corners.

How do I weld Inconel heat shield?

Spot welding works best. Use a dent puller style spot welder, or convert a MIG by removing the wire feed and shaping the tip to a point or chisel, then run low amperage.

What goes under the Inconel?

Ceramic insulation. Car Builders sell a matching Ceramic Insulation blanket for this.

Will it rust?

Car Builders state Inconel resists corrosion, rust and road grime.
