Product features

Quick answer: A Defender or Perentie cabin rings like a drum from bare panels, and the roof radiates heat and noise. Worn vinyl floors make it worse. Car Builders makes four Land Rover packs: Defender 90, 110 wagon, 130 dual cab and Perentie. Each has deadener for vibration control, Insul-Layer for the roof and an install kit. You then choose whether to keep the factory vinyl floor and whether to cover the rear cargo area with Sound Barrier Floor Mat.

Why a Defender is so loud, and the fix

  • Panels that ring like a drum. The deadener goes on the floor pan, rear cargo, rear wheel arches, rear quarters, doors and roof skin to control panel drumming. It is meant to damp vibration, not cover every surface 100%.
  • A roof that radiates heat and noise. Each pack carries enough 6mm Insul-Layer to cover the whole roof skin as a thermal and acoustic barrier. The Perentie gets a single sheet.
  • Worn or missing vinyl floor. If your factory vinyl is gone or damaged, Sound Barrier Floor Mat replaces it in the seated area. It is a durable finished face sound blanket, so no carpet or rubber is needed over it.
  • Cargo floor noise. The cargo option is backed Sound Barrier Floor Mat laid as a finished sound blanket.

How it works

A good factory vinyl floor is already an effective sound blanket for the seated area, so if yours is in good shape, deadener underneath is all you need. Where it is damaged or missing, the unbacked Sound Barrier Floor Mat takes over as a Stage 2 blanket. In the 130, a box of dual layer 12mm Acoustic Liner covers the rear firewall.

What is in the box for each Land Rover

  • 3 sheets 6mm Insul-Layer, 3 square metres
  • Install kit: roller, knife, foil tape
  • Not retaining floor: 3.2 square metres unbacked mat
  • Cargo area: 6.4 square metres backed mat

Land Rover 110 wagon, approx 35kg

  • 5 boxes Stage 1 Sound Deadener, 9 square metres
  • 4 sheets 6mm Insul-Layer, 4 square metres
  • Install kit: roller, knife, foil tape

  • Not retaining floor: 6.4 square metres unbacked mat

Land Rover Perentie, approx 25kg

The Sound Barrier Floor Mat needs Car Builders spray grade contact adhesive, which is sold separately.

Sizing the floor mat

Car Builders allows a 1950mm x 1350mm length of Sound Barrier Floor Mat per row of seating. A cargo area takes a 1950mm x 1350mm length, plus a further 950mm x 1350mm if you want the wheel arches covered too.

Which Land Rover does it fit?

Choose the Vehicle option that matches yours: Land Rover 90, 110 wagon, 130 dual cab or Perentie. The 130 pack has no cargo option. On a Perentie that is canvas from front to rear, the one Insul-Layer sheet can go over the deadener in the doors instead.

How to install in a Land Rover

Effort: the deadener and roof foam are straightforward. Neatly upholstering the seat area with floor mat takes some skill.

  1. Remove the seats and, if you are replacing it, the factory vinyl floor. Take off the door trims and roof lining.
  2. Clean every panel you are treating with wax and grease remover or isopropanol.
  3. Roll deadener onto the floor pan, cargo floor, rear arches, rear quarters, doors and roof skin, aiming to stop vibration rather than reach full coverage.
  4. Stick Insul-Layer over the whole roof skin. In a 130, add Acoustic Liner to the rear firewall.
  5. Refit your vinyl, or glue the Sound Barrier Floor Mat into the seat area and cargo area with spray grade contact adhesive.

Defender mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering floor mat without the contact adhesive to glue it.
  • Throwing out a sound factory vinyl floor. If it is in good condition it already does the job.

Common questions from Land Rover owners

Do I need floor mat if my Defender vinyl is good?

No. Car Builders says a factory vinyl floor in good condition is an effective sound blanket, so the deadener under it is enough.

Does the Defender pack cover every panel 100%?

No, and it is not meant to. Stage 1 is a damping mat used to calm vibrating panels, so it goes where the panels vibrate.

What can I do with the Perentie Insul-Layer sheet on a canvas roof?

Fit it over the deadener inside the doors.

Does the Perentie pack get as much Insul-Layer?

No. The Perentie gets a single sheet. The other packs carry enough to cover the whole roof skin.
