Product features

Quick answer: A dual cab ute gets loud and hot: tyre roar through the long floor pan, boom off the wall behind the back seat, hollow doors and heat through the floor and roof. For a Hilux, Ranger, Triton, Navara, D-Max, Amarok, Rodeo or Colorado, this Car Builders kit turns up with the deadener, underlay and foam already counted out for a dual cab. Packs 1 and 3 leave the roof alone, and Packs 2 and 4 take it on.

Why a dual cab gets loud and hot

  • Tyre roar coming up through the rear floor. A dual cab floor pan is long and flat, so it rings. Stage 1 Sound Deadener goes down from above the pedals, right across the pan and up the rear firewall to just under the back window.
  • A booming wall behind the back seat. That rear firewall is one big sheet of steel close to your passengers. After the deadener, 12mm Acoustic Liner sticks over it to soak up what is left.
  • Hollow sounding doors. With the door trims off, the deadener goes straight onto the outer door skins so they stop resonating every time the road gets rough.
  • Heat climbing through the floor and roof. The 10mm Waterproof Carpet Underlay copies your factory underlay and slows heat transfer. The premium packs swap it for Mass Noise Liner, which blocks more heat and sound, and the roof packs add Insul-Layer as a heat barrier above your head.
  • Owning a full size American ute. Car Builders make an XL pack for the F250, Ram and Silverado. We do not list it yet, so contact our team before you order for one of those.

How it works in a dual cab

Think of it as two jobs. The butyl based Stage 1 sheets kill panel vibration at the metal. Then a second layer goes on top to stop airborne noise and heat: peel and stick closed cell foam in Packs 1 and 2, or Mass Noise Liner in Packs 3 and 4. Mass Noise Liner is 10mm closed cell foam with a 2mm mass loaded vinyl skin, it is waterproof, and it is laid loose rather than stuck down.

Picking the right dual cab pack

Start with the roof. If the headliner stays put, you are choosing between Pack 1 and Pack 3. If you are happy to drop it, Pack 2 or Pack 4. Then decide on the floor layer: the standard packs stick down foam underlay, while the premium packs lay Mass Noise Liner the whole way from the front firewall to the rear one.

Will it fit your dual cab?

Car Builders sells this for dual cab utes and names the Hilux, Ranger, Triton, Navara, D-Max, Amarok, Rodeo and Colorado, plus 70 Series LandCruisers and the BT 50. Nothing is pre cut. You get full sheets and trim them in the cab as you go.

How to install it in a dual cab

Effort: moderate. The sheets are easy to lay. Getting both rows of seats, the carpet and four door cards out is where the hours go.

  1. Pull the front and rear seats, lift the carpet and take the door trims off. Drop the headliner only if you bought Pack 2 or Pack 4.
  2. Wipe every panel down with a solvent based wax and grease remover or isopropanol until it is free of dust and oil.
  3. Start the deadener above the pedals and work rearward over the floor pan, then up the rear firewall stopping below the window. Press each sheet flat with the timber roller.
  4. Treat the outer door skins through the trim openings, and the roof skin if your pack covers it.
  5. Cover the floor with underlay or lay the Mass Noise Liner, stick Acoustic Liner over the deadened rear firewall and put Insul-Layer across the roof skin.
  6. Put the cab back together.

Mistakes we see on dual cabs

  • Ordering a standard pack for a Ram, F250 or Silverado without talking to our team first. It will run short halfway across the floor.
  • Leaving the rear firewall bare. It is the panel your back seat passengers hear most.

FAQ: dual cab packs

Which pack is right for my Ranger or Hilux?

Any of Packs 1 to 4 suits a standard dual cab. Go odd numbers to skip the roof, even numbers to include it, and Packs 3 or 4 if you want Mass Noise Liner on the floor.

Are door skins part of the premium Pack 3?

Yes. Car Builders list Pack 3 as the floor pan, rear wall and doors premium pack, and it covers everything but the roof.

What makes the premium dual cab packs different?

They replace the stick down foam with Mass Noise Liner, which carries a 2mm mass loaded vinyl layer, so it blocks more sound and heat. They are also heavier, at approx 35kg for Pack 3 and approx 40kg for Pack 4.

Do I need to buy tools?

No. A roller, utility knife and roll of foil tape come in every dual cab pack, plus a stubby holder and bottle opener.
