True Point Source Sound High-End Coincident Coaxial Made in Germany, No Integrated Crossover, DSP or Ci7 FX-UNI.2 Required

Product Overview

The HELIX Ci7 C165.2FM-S3 is a 6.5" high-end coaxial coincident speaker from the HELIX COMPOSE i7 series the flagship tier of the COMPOSE platform, manufactured entirely in Germany under the influence of HELIX's high-end sister brand BRAX. It is not a conventional coaxial speaker. In a standard coaxial, the tweeter is offset from the cone and mounted on a separate former above it. In the C165.2FM-S3, the Ci7 T20FM-SC silk dome tweeter is mounted truly concentrically through the centre of the Ci7 W165FM-S3 UHD paper cone midbass both drivers fire from exactly the same spatial point. This makes the speaker a genuine point source, eliminating the phase and dispersion inconsistencies of offset driver arrangements.

The system uses the i7's Ultra High Damping (UHD) paper cone a proprietary HELIX process that achieves superior cone control and impulse response compared to conventional paper. The silk dome tweeter features an integrated coupling volume dampened with pure lamb's wool, which allows a lower resonance frequency and therefore a lower practical crossover point than would otherwise be achievable from a tweeter of this size. The 37mm voice coil on the midbass (unusually large for a 6.5" driver) handles thermal stress across high output demands.

Features & Benefits

  • True coincident coaxial design — the tweeter is mounted through the centre of the midbass cone so both drivers share an identical acoustic origin point; this creates a genuine point source that eliminates the comb filtering and phase inconsistencies common in offset coaxial designs
  • Made in Germany — the entire Ci7 series is manufactured in Germany; this is a genuine high-end product with direct lineage from HELIX's BRAX reference brand
  • UHD (Ultra High Damping) crafted paper cone — HELIX's proprietary paper cone process delivers significantly higher internal damping than standard paper or composite alternatives, yielding exceptional impulse response and natural midrange character with minimal stored energy or ringing
  • Silk dome tweeter with coupling volume — the 20mm silk dome is housed in a dampened coupling volume filled with pure lamb's wool; this lowers the tweeter's effective resonance frequency, enabling a lower crossover point and smoother integration with the midbass
  • No integrated crossover — DSP or separate crossover required — for active operation: two DSP-amplified channels per speaker with highpass applied in the DSP; for passive operation: the separately available Ci7 FX-UNI.2 crossover is required; this is not a limitation but a deliberate audiophile design choice that maximises performance when properly configured
  • 37mm voice coil — substantially larger than typical 6.5" driver voice coils; the larger former dissipates heat more effectively, reducing thermal compression and maintaining consistent performance at sustained high output levels
  • 3 Ohm high-efficiency design — matched for HELIX and MATCH amplifiers; the lower impedance increases real-world sensitivity and extracts maximum current from the amplifier
  • High-tech polymer basket with glass bead reinforcement — minimises self-resonance, eliminates magnetic flux modulation, resists thermal expansion; more compact than traditional cast frames for tighter installation clearances
  • ProConnect terminal — professional automotive-grade connector that accepts both conventional speaker flat plugs and HELIX WireKit harnesses; locking, reverse-polarity protected, and rated for automotive vibration and moisture environments
  • FlexMount165 compatible — vehicle-specific adaptor rings (sold separately) allow installation in factory speaker mounting positions with acoustic optimisation

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "coincident" mean and how is this different from a regular coaxial?

In a standard coaxial speaker, the tweeter is mounted on a bracket above and slightly behind the midbass cone — the two drivers are close together but not at the same point. In a coincident design like the Ci7 C165.2FM-S3, the tweeter is mounted through the geometric centre of the midbass cone so both drivers fire from exactly the same spatial location. The result is a true acoustic point source: both frequencies arrive at the listening position in perfect time alignment from a single origin, producing coherent imaging and even dispersion in a way that is architecturally impossible with offset coaxial or separated component arrangements.

Does this speaker include a crossover?

No — the Ci7 C165.2FM-S3 does not include an integrated crossover. For passive operation, the Ci7 FX-UNI.2 crossover (sold separately) is required. For active operation, you need at least two DSP-amplified channels per speaker, with a highpass filter for the tweeter configured in the DSP or DSP amplifier. This is a deliberate design choice: a separately optimised crossover or DSP-controlled filter outperforms any integrated passive network in absolute audio terms.

What is the UHD paper cone?

UHD (Ultra High Damping) is HELIX's proprietary treatment process for paper cones. The process significantly increases the internal damping coefficient of the cone material — essentially the cone's ability to absorb and dissipate energy rather than re-radiating it as distortion. The result is exceptional impulse response (the cone starts and stops precisely), natural midrange character, and reduced colouration compared to conventional paper, composite, or polymer cones.

How does the silk dome with coupling volume work?

The tweeter dome sits within a small sealed acoustic volume (the coupling volume) rather than being open to the rear of the basket. This volume is dampened with pure lamb's wool, which acts as a resistive absorber for the tweeter's rear wave. The effect is to lower the tweeter's effective resonance frequency — the practical minimum frequency at which it can operate safely. A lower resonance frequency means the crossover point between midbass and tweeter can be set lower, improving integration and reducing the gap in coverage between the two drivers.

How does the Ci7 C165.2FM-S3 compare to the HELIX Ci3 K165.2FM-S3?

The Ci3 K165.2FM-S3 is a 2-way component kit with separate midbass, tweeter, and crossover; the tweeter installs independently. The Ci7 C165.2FM-S3 is a single coincident coaxial unit — both drivers share a mounting point. The Ci7 is the higher tier (i7 vs i3), made in Germany, uses UHD paper (vs Cenosphere), a silk dome tweeter (vs aluminium), a 37mm voice coil (vs 25mm), handles 150W RMS (vs 100W), and has no integrated crossover. The Ci3 is a comprehensive ready-to-install kit with crossover included; the Ci7 requires additional planning around DSP or a separate crossover purchase.
