GME GX625 Portable Handheld Marine VHF Radio 5W and 1W IP66 1200mAh Li-Ion Battery Dual and Triple Watch for Tenders Dinghies Kayaks and Small Watercraft

The GME GX625 is a portable handheld marine VHF radio for small watercraft and secondary communication on larger vessels. Switchable 5W/1W output, IP66 dust and water jet protection, a 1200mAh Li-Ion battery, dual and triple watch, and international, USA, and Canadian channel sets. Includes a 240V drop-in charger, wrist strap, and belt clip. Suited to tenders, dinghies, tinnies, kayaks, and jet skis that do not have fixed electrical systems or space for a conventional fixed-mount radio.

Product overview

VHF marine radio (156 to 174 MHz) is the internationally recognised standard for maritime communication, used globally for vessel-to-vessel, vessel-to-shore, distress alerting on Channel 16, and port operations. The GX625 brings this standard to small watercraft and portable applications where a fixed-mount radio such as the GX700B or GX700W is not practical.

Switchable 5W/1W output provides full-range 5W communication for normal vessel operation and 1W for close-range use boat-to-tender communication, marina operations, and situations where reduced range is sufficient and battery conservation is a priority. Transmit power is the primary battery drain on handheld radios, so 1W mode significantly extends operating time. The 1200mAh Li-Ion battery supports extended use without shore power, and the included 240V drop-in charging cradle recharges the battery between uses.

IP66 means the radio is fully dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction covering spray, rain, and water contact during normal on-water use. IP66 is not a submersion rating; for confirmed submersion resistance the GX800W (IP67) is the appropriate choice. The GX625 also suits larger vessels as a secondary portable radio for crew members away from the helm.

The flexible, removable antenna can be removed for storage. Dual and triple watch monitor two or three channels simultaneously including Channel 16. Programmable scan stops on active transmissions and returns to scanning when the channel clears.

Frequently asked questions

What is VHF marine radio and how is it different from UHF CB? VHF marine radio operates in the 156 to 174 MHz band the internationally recognised standard for maritime communication used globally for vessel-to-vessel, vessel-to-shore, distress (Channel 16), and port operations. UHF CB operates at 477 MHz and is an Australian land-based CB system not intended for maritime use. VHF marine radio is the correct standard for coastal and offshore vessels in Australian and international waters.

What does IP66 mean and can the GX625 be dropped overboard? IP66 means fully dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction covering spray, rain, and water contact during normal on-water use. IP66 is not a submersion rating. If the GX625 is dropped overboard, it may not survive depending on depth and duration. For confirmed submersion resistance, the GX800W carries an IP67 rating with Float and Flash capability.

What does 5W and 1W switchable power mean? 5W is the standard transmit power for full-range handheld VHF marine communication typically several nautical miles in good conditions depending on antenna height and terrain. Switching to 1W reduces transmit power for short-range communication such as boat-to-tender, and significantly extends battery life as transmit power is the primary battery drain on handheld radios.

What vessels and situations is the GX625 best suited to? The GX625 is designed for small watercraft without fixed electrical systems tenders, dinghies, kayaks, tinnies, and jet skis where a fixed-mount VHF radio is not practical. It also serves as an effective secondary portable radio on larger vessels, allowing crew members away from the helm to maintain communication.

What is included in the package? The GX625 includes the radio, 1200mAh Li-Ion battery pack, 240V drop-in charging cradle, wrist strap, belt clip, and flexible removable antenna. Contact us to confirm current package contents as accessories may vary.
