The GME GX625 is a portable handheld marine VHF radio designed for small watercraft and secondary communication on larger vessels. It is specifically suited to dinghies, tenders, tinnies, kayaks, and jet skis that may not have fixed electrical systems or space for a conventional fixed-mount radio yet still need reliable marine VHF communication.
Offering switchable 5W/1W output power, the GX625 covers all International, US, and Canadian VHF marine channel sets. IP66 ingress protection guards against dust and powerful water jets. A class-leading 1200mAh Li-Ion battery provides extended operating life. The standard package includes a 240V drop-in charger, wrist strap, and belt clip.
Features include dual watch, triple watch, and programmable scan functions, plus a large bright LCD display. The antenna is flexible and removable.

VHF (Very High Frequency) marine radio operates in the 156–174 MHz band — this is the internationally recognised standard for maritime communication, used globally for vessel-to-vessel, vessel-to-shore, distress (Channel 16), and port operations communication. 27MHz marine radio (as in the GME GX400) uses a lower frequency HF band primarily used in Australian coastal waters. UHF CB operates at 477 MHz and is an Australian land-based CB system. VHF marine radio is the standard for coastal and offshore vessels internationally.
IP66 means the radio is fully dust-tight (rated 6 — maximum dust protection) and protected against powerful water jets from any direction (rated 6 — direct water jet protection). This covers spray, rain, and water immersion during normal use on the water. However, IP66 is not a submersion rating — it is not designed to be fully submerged. IPX7 (as on the AIST120 and GX400) is the submersion standard. If the GX625 is dropped overboard, it may not survive depending on depth and duration — confirm submersion capability with GME.
5W is the standard transmit power for full-range marine VHF communication — at 5W, the GX625 can communicate with vessels and shore stations at the maximum effective range for handheld VHF operation (typically several nautical miles in good conditions, depending on antenna height and terrain). Switching to 1W reduces transmit power for short-range communication (such as boat-to-tender) and significantly extends battery life, as transmit power is the primary battery drain on handheld radios.
The GX625 is specifically designed for small watercraft without fixed electrical systems — tenders, dinghies, kayaks, tinnies, and jet skis — where a fixed-mount VHF radio is not practical. It is also useful as a secondary or portable radio on larger vessels, allowing crew members away from the helm to maintain communication. The 1200mAh Li-Ion battery supports extended use without shore power.
The GX625 package includes the radio itself, a 1200mAh Li-Ion battery pack, a 240V drop-in charging cradle, a wrist strap, and a belt clip. The flexible, removable antenna is also included. Confirm current package contents with GME as accessories may vary.
