Product features

Quick answer: Car-Rep 1K Etch Primer is a chromate free acid primer in a spray can, loaded with active rust protection pigments. Use it where you have sanded through to bare metal, on aluminium and on galvanised metal. You can weld through it, it sands well, and primer or topcoat can follow once it has had between 10 and 15 minutes.

What does an etch primer fix?

  • Topcoat lifting off bare spots. Acid etch gives paint a grip on sand throughs, alloy and galvanised metal.
  • Rust creeping in before the job is painted. Active anti rust pigments protect the metal under the coat.
  • Welding a primed seam. It doubles as a weld through primer.

Why it suits spot repairs

Thin layers dry quickly and build the film you need. Most car paints, water based ones included, go straight over it. Car Builders call it ideal for spot and part painting.

Priming a repair

Difficulty: Easy to moderate.

  1. Wet sand the area with 400 to 600 paper.
  2. Wipe it down with Car-Rep pre paint cleaner.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Spray several thin layers to build film thickness.
  5. Recoat, or apply topcoat, once between 10 and 15 minutes have passed.

Etch primer mistakes to avoid

  • Putting polyester filler or epoxy over it. Car Builders say do not.
  • One heavy coat in place of several thin ones.
